“Galbée” translates from French as “curved,” referring to the softened, ergonomic case profile introduced with this updated design. The Santos is widely regarded as one of the first purpose-designed wristwatches for men, created in 1904 by Louis Cartier for his friend, the pioneering aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who required a practical timepiece he could read while flying. The modern Santos aesthetic was revitalised in the late 1970s with the introduction of the integrated steel bracelet, featuring exposed screws and a design language inspired by early industrial and aviation engineering. At 29mm, this configuration represents the traditional men’s size of the Galbée era — elegant, proportionate, and true to late-20th-century design language. A foundational design in modern wristwatch history and one of the most recognisable shapes ever created.
